A dream about being a person.

To realize that all your life - you know, all your love, all your hate, all your memory, all your pain - it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream. A dream that you had inside a locked room. A dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams there's a monster at the end of it.

The objective referee of a clock is another clock.

Time... you can't see it, you can't hear it, you can't weigh it, you can't measure it in a laboratory. It is a subjective sense of becoming, what we are, in stead of what we were a nanosecond ago, becoming what we will be in another nanosecond. The whole piece of time's a landscape existing, we form behind us and we move, we move through it slice by slice.

I wonder if you can.

I see inequality as the abuse of power. It’s the failure of a society to value its citizens equally, and the success of institutions (governments, corporations, etc.) in keeping some people oppressed and exploited. I don’t see equality as equal opportunity; that’s not enough. We can have an academic conversation about how everyone in a society would have the same opportunity to succeed and be safe if only they applied themselves fully. In practice this isn’t true, because the oppressed, the weak and the less powerful have less access to resources and opportunities. In fact rampant capitalism ensures and entrenches that. Inequality is one of the roots of injustice, and one of the biggest contributing factors to crime and violence (including war). It’s the result of unchecked privilege and of the inability to empathize. It’s the ritual humiliation of the less powerful for the benefit of the more powerful. It’s depressing and tragic, and the worst part is it’s completely unnecessary and totally avoidable, even in a capitalist economy. So, when I see inequality, I see a society that has chosen to keep some of its members subjugated, even though all evidence and observation says that it’s destructive and completely preventable.

I am just like you.

Whatever is on my mind, I say it as I feel it, I'm truthful to myself; I'm young and I'm old, I've been bought and I've been sold, so many times. I am hard-faced, I am gone.

It's just one story. The oldest.

-Hey, uh... Didn't, uh... didn't you tell me one time at dinner once, maybe, about you used to... you used to make up stories about the stars?
-Yeah, that was-- that was, um, in A-Alaska, under the-- under the night skies.
-Yeah, you used to lay there and look up, yeah, at the stars?
-Yeah, and you remember I... I never watched a TV till I was 17, so there wasn't much to fuckin' do out there besides walk around and explore and--
-And... and look up at the stars and make up stories. Like what?
-I tell you, Marty, I've been up in that room looking out those windows every night here and just thinking... It's just one story. The oldest.
-What's that? -Light versus dark.
-Well, I know we ain't in Alaska, but... appears to me that the dark has a lot more territory.
-Yeah. You're right about that.
-Hey, listen, hey.
-Yeah, what?
-Why don't you point me in the direction of the car, man?
I've spent enough of my fuckin' life in hospitals.
-Jesus. Oh. You know what? I'd protest, but it occurs to me that you're unkillable. You want to go back, get clothes or anything?
-No, anything I left back there, I don't need. You know, you're looking at it wrong, the... sky thing. -How is that?
-Well, once, there was only dark. If you ask me, the light's winning.
