I walked in
the room and saw a man in his early 30s who looked like he was 92, who was skin
and bones, who weighed maybe 80 pounds, who was on a respirator. And, uh... and
he said, he said to me... "Do me this... You've gotta do me a favor."
And I said, "Whatever it is, just ask." And he said, "I can't go
on like this." He said, "You know, I just... If you could, just carry
me up to the roof and throw me over the... roof." He goes, "I only
weigh about 80 pounds, and you're strong, you could do it." And then I
said, "Jay, I can't do that. You can't ask that of me."

But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him. When he is at work in the north, I do not see him; when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him. But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. My feet have closely followed his steps; I have kept to his way without turning aside. I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread. But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases. He carries out his decree against me, and many such plans he still has in store. That is why I am terrified before him; when I think of all this, I fear him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me. Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.

-Hey, uh... Didn't, uh... didn't you tell me one time at dinner once, maybe,
about you used to... you used to make up stories about the stars?
-Yeah, that was-- that was, um, in A-Alaska, under the-- under the night skies.
-Yeah, you used to lay there and look up, yeah, at the stars?
-Yeah, and you remember I... I never watched a TV till I was 17, so there wasn't much to fuckin' do out there besides walk around and explore and--
-And... and look up at the stars and make up stories. Like what?
-I tell you, Marty, I've been up in that room looking out those windows every night here and just thinking... It's just one story. The oldest.
-What's that? -Light versus dark.
-Well, I know we ain't in Alaska, but... appears to me that the dark has a lot more territory.
-Yeah. You're right about that.
-Hey, listen, hey.
-Yeah, what?
-Why don't you point me in the direction of the car, man?
I've spent enough of my fuckin' life in hospitals.
-Jesus. Oh. You know what? I'd protest, but it occurs to me that you're unkillable. You want to go back, get clothes or anything?
-No, anything I left back there, I don't need. You know, you're looking at it wrong, the... sky thing. -How is that?
-Well, once, there was only dark. If you ask me, the light's winning.
-Yeah, that was-- that was, um, in A-Alaska, under the-- under the night skies.

- You know what my dissertation was on? How patience is adaptive. Hunters are at the top of the food chain, and they all take their time.- Patience... I find is overrated.
- I noticed. You like to push, to make things happen.
- That's when people trip up.
- Most people. You're gonna lose this game.
- It's not a game, Martin.
- Sure, it is. You love it just as much as I do. I see it. You're leaking joy. I tell you what, you beat me, and I'll even give you back your 200 bucks. Good chess players think 5 moves ahead.
- Great chess players think one move ahead, but it's always the right move.

-Come here. Let me show you something. What do you suppose is in that cocoon, Charlie?
-I don't know. A butterfly, I guess.
-It's much more beautiful than that. That's a moth cocoon. It's ironic, butterflies get all the attention but moths, they spin silk, they're stronger, faster...
-That's wonderful, but...
-You see this little hole? This moth's just about to emerge. It's in there right now, struggling. It's digging its way through the thick hide of the cocoon. Now, I could help it. Take my knife, gently widen the opening and the moth would be free. But it would be too weak to survive. The struggle is nature's way of strengthening it. Now, this is the second time you've asked me for your drugs back. Ask me again and it's yours.

-Let's break it down. Hydrogen. What does that give us?
-By mole we re lookingat 63 percent.
-63? That is a big bite.
-My next step's gotta be oxygen.
-Oxygen, 26 percent.
-26. There you have your water.
-Carbon, 9 percent
-Carbon, 9
-For total of 98 percent
-Right
-Nitrogen 1,25 percent
-One point two five
-That brings you to 99 and a quarter.
-Which only leaves you with trace elements... Down where the magic happens.
-Oh wait a minute. What about calcium? Calcium's not a trace. Got a whole skeleton to account for you would think right?
-Right. Calcium. Calcium's only 0,25 percent
-What? That low? Seriously? Damn I never would've thought that.
-Ok so where does iron fit in?
-Iron. Well ok 0.00004 percent.
-What? You can't have haemoglobin without iron.
-Apparently, it don't take to much.
-No doubt. Go figure. Sodium
-Sodium, 0,04. Phosphorus, 0.19
-Point one nine
-There we go. So the whole thing adds up to 99.888042 percent. We're 0,111958% shy
-Supposedly that's everything.
- I don't know I just.. It seems like something's missing, doesn't it? There's gotta be more to a human being than that.
-What about the soul?
-The soul... There's nothing but chemistry here.
-By mole we re lookingat 63 percent.
